after the death of her parents, elena gilberthas been trying to put her life back together,but nothing just seems right. she and her brother jeremy are now being taken care of by their aunt jenna.

originally katerina petrova, katherine has spent the better part of the last five hundred years running from an original vampire. she is more or less just out to better her own existence and doesn't really care about many others.

unknowingly the doppelganger of the immortal silas, stefan is the younger brother of vampire damon. they were both turned by katherine pierce and have moved back to mystic falls.

known fondly (sort of) as the "bad brother," damon salvatore actually does have a nicer side, it's just that no one ever gets to see it. he is more than willing to help out his brother, though he'll act reluctant. he was turned with his brother by katherine pierce, but was forced to make the transition by stefan.

jeremy is the younger brother of elena gilbert. when his parents died he turned to drugs and alcohol, though he's a good kid at heart.

cool aunt jenna was very recently a college party girl. when her sister died she was thrown into the role of parent and had trouble coping at first, but she is quickly learning how to be the kind of parent that the gilbert teens deserve.

bonnie has just found out that she is descended from a long line of bennett witches, one of which was actually associated with katherine pierce. she is learning to use her new abilities and trying to remain true to herself at the same time.

caroline is one of the most active teenagers in the mystic falls community, in an entirely good way. though she is a bit of a control freak, she is a regular volunteer and tries to keep her bubbly personality even when things look like they're heading south.

matt is a hard-working kind of guy who has too much responsibility for a man his age. he takes care of his older sister, vicki, because their mother is constantly away. but he tries hard and he's a popular guy, the quarterback of the high school football team.

vicki is a troubled girl who is addicted to drugs. she has had a thing for jeremy but she is officially in a relationship with tyler lockwood, for the moment anyway.

currently human, tyler carries the werewolf gene and could turn if he kills someone, though he's currently unaware of that. he has some anger issues and can be a bit of a bully, but he isn't a completely terrible guy. he's the son of the mayor and doesn't have a very good relationship with his father.

alaric, or "ric," is a history teacher at mystic falls high school. after what he believes was the death of his wife by damon, ric took up vampire hunting and moved to the small town specifically for its supernatural activity. he is also the owner of a bewitched ring that allows him to come back from a supernatural death.

being part of one of the founding families, and a believer in vampires, sheriff elizabeth, "liz," forbes is one of the people on the secret council. her goal is to keep the townspeople safe from supernatural activity, but it's become a bit of a challenge recently.

richard lockwood is the mayor of mystic falls and part of the secret council. he also carries the werewolf gene but he has never triggered it. on the surface he is a nice man but he is violent and a bit of a bully underneath.

the wife of richard lockwood, carol married into the founding families, but has earned a seat on the secret council. she is a prominent member of the community and often helps host events for the town.

lexi branson is the vampire best friend of stefan salvatore. she doesn't call mystic falls home but she doesn't mind a visit to stefan. their relationship is completely platonic. lexi is the vampire that helped stefan beat his ripper days.

anna's main goal is to free her mother, pearl, from the vampire tomb. she poses as a home school student who is interested in the supernatural and a little clingy to any friend that she makes. since her arrival to mystic falls she has been trying to find one of the gilbert journals.

isobel lost most of her caring side when she became a vampire. she is believed to be dead, but the truth is that damon turned her at her request. as a human she was interested in the supernatural. she was the wife of alaric and is the biological mother of elena.

john is the biological father to elena gilbert, though she doesn't know it quite yet. he hates vampires though he's willing to work with isobel, and he is the owner of a ring that allows him to come back from a supernatural death. john is also sort of an honorary member of the secret council, since he doesn't always live in mystic falls.

after having his wife turn him and his children into vampires, mikael began to dislike the existence. a witch trapped him and forced him to decay, which is his current situation.

elijah is one of the more human originals. he isn't always just out to better his own situation, but he doesn't jump into things without considering the consequences either. he is generally more trustworthy than the others, though he has been known to go back on his word on a few occasions.

finn is the brother who most hates what he is. he isn't going to go as far as hunting down other vampires, but he will take the chance to really die if it is offered to him, especially if it means taking down his brothers and sister with him.

klaus is the only brother who is not the biological son of mikael. he is the son of a werewolf, but his werewolf side is currently blocked, though he has killed before. he needs to perform a ritual to become a hybrid, and he is completely willing to unlock his werewolf side.

the youngest living son is a little unstable. he is unpredictable and his motives are not always known, maybe to even himself. he is a rule breaker and challenges his siblings on a regular basis.

rebekah is one of the original vampires and is very difficult to kill. she is the only female original. she is a selfish girl but wants people to like her. she enjoys attention but wants to be more normal.
