Personality:
Originally a upbeat sort of girl, Elena has kept a little more to herself than normal since the death of her parents. She is still as friendly as ever, but she has a tendency to pretend to be okay even when she isn't, not that very many people notice. Elena is a very caring person, sometimes a little too caring, and hates when she sees people she cares about getting hurt, especially if it is her doing. She feels like it is a bit her fault that her parents died because she was the reason they were out and somehow she made it out of the car when they didn't. She used to be involved in several community events and volunteer, but all of that has taken a back seat since the death of her parents and she only vaguely realizes it.

History:
On June 22, 1992 Elena Gilbert was born. Though she is unaware (currently) that she is adopted, that was the case. Isobel Flemming was brought to Miranda and Grayson Gilbert by Grayson's brother John. Isobel and John are her biological parents, though Elena thinks she is still the biological daughter of Grayson and Miranda. Isobel took off and was never seen or heard from, so John and Miranda's names are on the birth certificate. She had a pretty normal early life after that. Her parents were from the founding families so she was involved in a lot of social events. She shared a lot of her childhood memories with Matt Donovan, who she shared a crib with when they were still infants. She wasn't an only child for long, though. Her parents had Jeremy. Elena always thought she was close to Jeremy, but recently she's beginning to wonder how close they really were.



In her sophomore year Elena began dating Matt. It only made sense because they had known each other their entire lives and they had feelings for each other. She really did care for Matt and thought of him as her oldest friend. She never wanted to hurt him, but they got into an argument one night when Elena snuck out of the house to attend a party. Matt was always talking about their future and that just wasn't something that Elena was ready to talk about. She knew he was only doing it because he loved her, but she found the conversations awkward, which in hindsight probably should have told her something about their relationship. Elena called her family and asked her parents to come pick her up. Her parents didn't seem mad about the fact that she had blown them off to go to a party, and were even a little comforting. While she waited she met Damon Salvatore, who she had an odd conversation with about what she wanted in a relationship. But she doesn't remember meeting him at all.



On the way back home from the party, the car they were in went off the bridge. Elena doesn't remember much about the event, except that for some reason she was the only person to make it out of the car alive. She woke up in a hospital to the news of two dead parents. Her aunt, Jenna, took legal guardianship. Elena loves Jenna even though Jenna is a little young to be a parent. She knows that Jenna tries her best. Elena broke up with Matt and spent the summer trying to get over the death of her parents. She hasn't been entirely successful.
